Hey, I'm Bill.

61 years old. 45+ years of engineering. Still learning every day.

My Journey

I've spent over four decades building software. I was one of the first 15 engineers at a startup that grew into a $2B company. I've written code that's processed billions of dollars in transactions. I've managed teams, architected systems, and debugged more production incidents than I can count.

Now, at 61, I'm doing something different. I'm learning to build with AI. Not because I have to—because I want to. The tools available today are unlike anything I've seen in my career. Claude Code, in particular, has fundamentally changed what's possible for a single developer.

Vibe Engineering is my experiment in building in public. Real code, real struggles, real numbers. No vanity metrics, no growth hacking nonsense. Just an experienced engineer learning new tricks and sharing the journey.

The Philosophy

🏗️

Build Fast

Speed matters. But not reckless speed—sustainable velocity. Ship early, iterate often, learn from users. AI makes this faster than ever.

Build Right

Fast doesn't mean sloppy. Good architecture, clean code, proper testing. The shortcuts you take today become the bugs you debug tomorrow.

📖

Build in Public

Transparency creates accountability. Sharing the process helps others. The wins feel better and the losses teach more when they're witnessed.

🤖

Build with AI

AI isn't replacing developers—it's amplifying them. Learning to collaborate with AI tools is the most valuable skill I've developed in years.

The Timeline: 45 Years of Building

1979

First Lines of Code

Typed Hunt the Wumpus and Star Trek BASIC games into my Apple II+. The spark that started everything.

1986

Electronic Data Systems

Wrote COBOL and mainframe ALC for EDS—and Ross Perot!

1988

First Software Product

Placed an ad in Street & Smith's Pro Football for one of the first Fantasy Football programs. Built it in Turbo Pascal, sold it mail order.

1994

Red Light Camera Systems

Built and installed the first camera-based red light violation system—first installation was in NYC! Wrote the imaging subsystem in C.

2009

Geoforce

Employee engineer #1. Built asset tracking software. Watched some deepwater container assets go missing when the Deepwater Horizon exploded.

2015

Stitch Fix

Joined this Silicon Valley startup. Built a lot of features, managed a bunch of people for 7 years. Learned how to build practically and operate at scale.

2024

AI Awakening

Cursor changed my workflow. Started seeing a path to building solo again.

2025

Vibe Engineering

Started building in public. Documenting everything.

Let's Connect

I read every email and try to respond to most. Whether you're building something, have questions, or just want to say hi—I'd love to hear from you.
